There’s hardly a mother on earth who hasn’t heard the last-minute plea of a child who needs a dozen cupcakes for the next day’s school event. While a dash to the local bakery or grocer may be the only option in an emergency, that humble dozen might still show off a touch of creativity with some fresh cupcake decorating ideas.
For example, maybe it’s time for the annual class trip to the local science center to study insects. What could be more fun that a dozen bee-decorated cupcakes for a picnic at the center? There are a couple of options here. A local cake decorating shop probably has ready-made edible bee shapes, or bees can be created using black licorice straws, yellow jellied candies and chocolate mints cut in half to make wings. Arrange the candies on top of yellow-tinted buttercream frosting and chocolate cupcakes are transformed into buzzing treats.
Or how about ladybug cupcakes for the science center trip? These are so easy that even the kids can help (and maybe they should, since they sprung the last-minute notice!). Make up a batch of white buttercream frosting and save a portion to make ladybug faces. Tint the remaining frosting red and frost the cupcakes. Then put a dab of white on one side of the cupcake to make a face. Put one licorice strip down the center of the cupcake and dot each side with mini chocolate chips. Use mini rainbow chips to make a face, then add two licorice strips for antenna. These lovely ladies would also make a great birthday treat for a little girl’s party.
Maybe this year the class is studying amphibians. Frogs are friendly, fun and fun to make. The design can be green on top of white cupcakes, or the baker can go all-out and add some green food coloring to the white cupcake recipe. As with the bees and ladybugs, tint some buttercream frosting to a bright green shade using food coloring. Frost all the cupcakes, and then turn them into frogs by using marshmallows or jellied candies to creating protruding eyes. Use black licorice strips or red jellied candies to make froggy mouths, then cut the licorice into smaller pieces to make pupils for the eyes. See how it easy it is to be green? A little boy’s birthday party would be another ideal gathering for serve these friendly frogs.
Halloween is another opportunity for cupcake creativity. Instead of the usual orange pumpkin cakes or bat toppings, what about making some spooky eyeballs? These are among one of the easiest cupcake decorations around. Frost the cupcakes with basic white or buttercream cupcake frosting, then put a big red candy in the center and decorate with red gel icing to look like bloodshot eyes. Teen-agers especially will like this scary take on traditional cupcakes.
Finally, it isn’t only the youngsters who get to have fun decorating cupcakes. With the proper equipment, grown-ups can make up their own cupcake decorating ideas for any event, from an engagement party or a wedding to a football bash or a national holiday. All it takes is a little courage and experimentation to turn ho-hum cupcakes into party showstoppers!
