I Am Learning to Live on My Own with Aquaponics

February 14, 2012 at 10:10 am • Posted in GardeningComments Off

I have tried for what seems like years to become more of an outdoorsman, so that I can learn to live in an environment that has always frightened me. I am scared of being alone, and I can’t even fathom living in the woods by myself. It is this gripping fear within me that has driven me to learn about fishing and farming in recent months. I know that my fear of living alone is irrational, and that by overcoming this fear, I can become a more well-adjusted person in the world that I live in each day. I got the idea that I could even start an aquaponics system in the wild, where you grow fresh produce and support these plants with fertilizer that is naturally discarded by fish. That would be the ultimate way to support myself, and I feel like I am becoming more independent by making one right at home. To learn more, click here and get the full story.

The Guide to Growing Thyme Leaves

December 20, 2011 at 6:23 am • Posted in GardeningComments Off

Thyme Leaves are small yet they pack a big flavour. They are best described as pungent, sweet and mint-like. In the kitchen, thyme leaves can be used to flavour salad dressings, teas, and jellies. Many popular verities exist- notably orange, lemon and caraway thyme. Thyme is a small perennial shrub with tiny leaves and small white, purple or red flowers. It is best to germinate thyme indoors in a slightly basic medium. The plant thrives in low moister, full sunlight and a warm climate. It is known for being particularly hardy and for the most part is not affected by diseases or pests, as long as the soil is dry enough. Additionally, it is important to surround thyme with mulch to prevent the leaves from sticky dirt. Similar to other shrubs, thyme requires plenty of space to spread. Thyme can get quite woody when allowed to grow and therefore should be pruned once or twice a year.

How to Deal with Termites

November 16, 2011 at 8:09 am • Posted in GardeningComments Off

My wife and I live in a country home. Country living often has its challenges, but some challenges are best left unmet. That’s how I felt when I began seeing the tell-tale signs of termites in the rafters of the basement. I knew how quickly termites can compromise the structure of a house, causing extensive damage that is costly to repair. I had to act fast, since termites can multiply very quickly. I wanted an exterminator with a trustworthy brand name and who specializes in termites. I called Terminix to schedule an inspection of my home and to recommend the best termite control for the house. Representatives came right out and confirmed that we did indeed have termites. They treated the house with one of their liquid termite control solutions, and scheduled another inspection in a year. Since the house was treated, I’ve noticed no termites. I’m glad I acted quickly and called Terminix.

Application and Risks of Chlorpyrifos

July 11, 2011 at 9:23 pm • Posted in Gardening1 Comment

Chlorpyrifos is an insecticide that has worldwide usage, and is deemed to be a fairly safe insecticide if applied correctly. But if it is not applied correctly, the consequences can be bad. Therefore, it should only be applied by people with some prior training in the handling of pesticides and insecticides.

It is best to leave the application of chlorpyrifos in the hands of a trained pest control expert, especially if using it for the control of pests like termites, or garden pests. Chlorpyrifos is mainly used against insects and other invertebrates like fleas and bedbugs. It is manufactured by a company called Dow Chemical Company.

If used in very small doses, it probably is safe, but there are also well known documented health side effects of chlorpyrifos, such as autoimmune health disorders. It is also not safe for babies that are still in the fetal stage. That is why, chlorpyrifos is banned in many countries for residential use and only permitted in agriculture.

Japanese Knotweed is Pretty Bad Stuff

June 18, 2011 at 4:19 pm • Posted in GardeningComments Off

As you no doubt know if you have had to deal with it. I haven’t yet, I’ve just been reading up on it for a friend. He recently moved into a home and apparently he had no idea that the area was infested with the Japanese knotweed beforehand. Now he has to get rid of it before it damages his structures or the concrete on his drive. I think he’ll have to go to a professional to completely eradicate the stuff, from what I’m reading, especially since it has already gotten a good foothold. I feel sorry for him, but it will be much cheaper in the long run, I think. I don’t garden, myself, because I don’t have a green thumb. In fact, I have just the opposite — I have tried to grow plants but I kill every one of them. I think, though, that even I couldn’t kill the knotweed.

Have a Green Thumb, Even in Winter!

Growing our own plants is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Whether we are cultivating a set of beautiful flowers to decorate our home or are supplementing our food with delicious fresh vegetables that we grow ourselves, growing things in our own gardens is a great endeavor. However, many of us live in climates where much of the year is inhospitable to the growing that we want to do, and it can often be tough to get our plants the light and heat they need to flourish. This is where having a greenhouse can make your gardening so much easier. Greenhouses create a controlled environment so that plants can receive just the right conditions to grow even when the outdoor weather isn’t what they desire. Additionally, within a greenhouse there are different regions with different conditions, so that you can grow an array of different plants. They are the ideal way to keep yourself growing plants throughout the entire year!

Finding Services for Tree Pruning Edmonton

April 3, 2011 at 4:49 pm • Posted in GardeningComments Off

There are a lot of tree pruners out there, but you need to make sure you are hiring the right one. Most tree pruners are landscapers, so they do more than just pruning. You may be able to get a package deal and have your trees pruned, your hedges trimmed, and your lawn mowed. Tree pruning Edmonton is important in climates where the Spring weather sees a large amount of rainfall. This causes trees to bud with leaves and branches to grow. Smaller trees see a large growth rate, so it is important to prune these trees before they get too big and look unsightly. A well-taken care of yard is important to those who are trying to sell their house, since it shows what the yard can look like when it is at it’s best maintenance level. Yards that are poorly kept rarely impress a buyer, so a first impression is important.
